ABOUT SOOT
In Soot, the fictional life of Bridie ODoyle, a poor
Irish girl in an 1800s coal mine patch town, wraps around the
real-life violent death of Franklin Gowen, a 19th century kingpin
of railroads and coal mines.
Gowens cruelty erodes Bridies goodness and propels
her beyond the brink of hatred for the man at the heart of all
her misfortune. "The mine steals everything I love. Its
taking me too, piece by piece." At age 23, maddened by the
deaths of her husband and children, Bridie comes face to face
with Gowen, a gun, and a possible resolution to the never-solved
mystery of his demise.
